Orange County moves are expensive. According to the American Moving & Storage Association, the average local move for a 3-bedroom home runs $1,500–$2,500 — and long-distance jumps to $4,000+. What almost no one tells you: a huge chunk of that cost is transporting things you're going to throw away within six months of unboxing anyway.
We've done pre-move cleanouts for hundreds of Anaheim, Fullerton, Orange, and Garden Grove families, and the pattern is the same every time. People pack out of habit. They box up broken lamps, mismatched Tupperware, textbooks from 2004, and treadmills that haven't been used since the pandemic — and pay movers to haul it all to a house where it will sit in a garage for another five years.
The Three-Week Pre-Move Purge Timeline
3 weeks out: The garage and storage
Start where the biggest, heaviest items live. Garages and storage units are where 80% of unnecessary weight lives. Pull everything out, sort into keep / donate / haul, and be honest — if you haven't touched it in two years and it's not sentimental, it doesn't move with you.
2 weeks out: Furniture and appliances
Any furniture that doesn't fit the new floor plan or is showing serious wear should go. Same for extra appliances — the mini fridge in the garage, the second microwave, the treadmill that's now a coat rack. Movers charge per pound and per cubic foot. A single old sofa can add $100+ to your bill.
1 week out: Bins, boxes, and the small stuff
This is the sneaky one. Old paperwork, kitchen gadgets, kids' art projects, and closet clutter add up fast. Do a ruthless pass through every closet and drawer. Anything you're not sure about, ask yourself: would I buy this again today?
What to Donate vs. What to Toss
Orange County has excellent donation infrastructure. Before you throw anything usable in a dumpster, check what these organizations accept:
- Goodwill Southern California — 60+ locations across LA and OC. Takes clothes, small appliances, dishes, books.
- Habitat for Humanity ReStore — furniture, cabinetry, appliances, building materials. They'll often pick up large items free.
- Salvation Army Southern California — furniture, clothing, household goods.
- Local schools and shelters — often need books, art supplies, and kids' clothes.
We Sort and Donate for You
When we haul a load, we don't take everything to the landfill. About 75% of what we pick up gets recycled or donated. If you're overwhelmed with a pre-move cleanout, we can handle the sorting so you don't have to. Get a free quote.
The Items OC Movers Absolutely Won't Take
Even if you wanted to move them, most licensed OC moving companies won't load these onto the truck. Plan to dispose of them separately:
- Propane tanks (grills, RV, camping)
- Fuels, oils, gasoline, kerosene
- Paint, aerosols, cleaning chemicals
- Fireworks, ammunition, explosives
- Fertilizer and pesticides
- Perishable food and open containers
- Live plants (long-distance moves)
The California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) maintains a searchable directory of household hazardous waste facilities across the state, including several in Orange County.
How Junk Removal Fits Into Your Moving Budget
Here's the math we walk customers through. A typical pre-move cleanout with us runs $200–$600 depending on volume. That single truckload usually saves the average OC family a truck size upgrade with their movers (typically $300–$500) and 1–2 hours of moving labor ($200–$400). Do the cleanout, save more than it costs, and unpack into a clean space you'll actually enjoy. See our transparent pricing to plan ahead.
